Gill Stephens

Gill joined the Wiltshire Sight Board of Trustees in 2024, having lived experience of sight loss. Diagnosed with High Myopia Macular Degeneration in her twenties, her vision has gradually deteriorated, particularly in recent years. Based in Chippenham, Gill has volunteered with Wiltshire Sight for the past year, supporting our local group hubs — a role she continues alongside her trusteeship. She’s passionate about helping others come to terms with sight loss and sharing what has helped her on her journey. Before retiring in 2010, Gill worked for 22 years at the EPSRC, a UK Research Council, and was awarded an MBE in 2005 for Services to the Administration of Science. She enjoys music, audiobooks, and crocheting toy animals to help raise funds for the charity. Gill hopes to bring her lived experience to the Board, offering insight from the perspective of a visually impaired person.

Robin Stephens

Robin is a retired oceanographer, who has lived in Wiltshire for most of his working life. He has worked worldwide, predominantly in the oil and gas, and, latterly, offshore marine renewables industries, and has held senior technical and leadership positions. Robin’s late father had been severely visually impaired since being injured in an air raid at the age of nine in 1941. Thus, Robin has a deep personal awareness of the challenges of visual impairment, and a passion to use this to help others. Robin’s interests include sailing, sea kayaking, cycling, walking, playing music, painting, reading and travelling. He is married with two adult daughters.
